In this ‘Trompe L’Oeil’,
everything depicted is
painted exactly the same
size as the original
objects. They all must
logically be supported
or exist as they would
be in juxtaposition with
each other. Shadows
must fall correctly and
must also conform to
the shape of the surface
on which they rest. In
the centre of this
watercolour painting is
the original ‘prompt
script’ used in the very
first production of ‘The
Mousetrap’.
It was recovered by Sir
Peter Saunders after
being thrown away in a
waste–bin.
I had to be very careful
not to reveal the
murderer’s name which
was on the script, so hid
it under a little silver
mouse.
Silk, paper, silver, brass,
cloth – all types of
textures are found in
this painting.
