OIL PORTRAITS
From African Chiefs to
Captains of Industry, the
artist attempts to capture the
character of the sitter. This
may include backgrounds
depicting (in the example of
Peter Sutherland, below) the
original deeds to his Queen
Anne house, together with
artefacts from his school,
army career, and rowing club.
Or a hazy impression of cold
behind the Arctic explorer,
Charles Burton.
As an exercise, this small portrait
echoes the well-tried tradition of
replicating the art of the masters.
Much can be learned about their
methods of painting in this way.
